DON’T GET BURNED!

DON’T GET BURNED!

I love to share about all the different delicious meals I can easily prepare in my Ninja Foodi Air Fryer.  Fortunately, I have never used the pressure cooker function.

SharkNinja is recalling the Ninja Foodi OP300-seriesPressure Cookers/TenderCrisp Air Fryers.  The pressure-cooking lid can be opened during use, posing a serious burn hazard.   Consumers should stop using the pressure-cooking function and contact SharkNinja for a replacement lid.     SharkNinja Recall

The defective lids can lead to 1st, 2nd and in some instances, 3rd degree burns resulting in facial, limb, torso, ear and eye injury, scarring, disfigurement and nerve damage. Medical treatment and care, including hospitalization, are often needed.

Dangers of Pressure Cookers:

The National Library of Medicine did a study of 32 patients burned by explosive pressure cookers who suffered second and third degree burns as a result of contact with the steam produced by pressure cookers.  1 patient had a first-/second-degree burn, 3 had second-/third-degree burns, and 28 patients had second-degree burns (87.5%). The mean percentage of total body surface area burned was 14% (range: 5–25%). Three patients required intensive care hospitalization, and specific antibiotics were administered to three patients (9.37%). Thirty-one patients underwent debridement, with only one patient requiring grafting. The average length of hospital stay was 10.5 days (range: 2–37 days). Ocular injuries were associated with 11 cases (34.3%), and auricular injuries were associated with two cases (6.25%). The explosion of 5 pressure cookers resulted from product defects, while 26 explosions were attributed to user error (15.6%/81.2%).    Risk of burns in pressure cooker usage: a comprehensive analysis of explosive injuries – PMC

When using a pressure cooker remember to:

  1. Ensure your pressure cooker is clean and has no cracks or dents.
  2. Add your food and liquid according to your recipe.
  3. Close and lock the lid, then turn on the cooker to build pressure.
  4. Release the pressure when your food is done.
  5. Unlock and open the lid only after all the pressure has been released.
